Marvel movies and Disney+ series like “Loki” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” have breached the topic of the multiverse, but Doctor Strange is plunging right in, with Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlett Witch, at his side. With Raimi at the reins, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is poised to be the MCU’s first horror movie, though it still retains a PG-13 rating.
After helming the original Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” trilogy in the 2000s and changing the the comic book genre forever, Raimi has not touched a superhero movie since, and his last directorial effort was 2013’s “Oz the Great and Powerful.” Original “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson was set to take over the sequel, but he parted ways due to creative differences, paving the way for Raimi to return. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” brings back the ex-Sorcerer Supreme (he’s since lost the magical title on a technicality) for a terrifying, cross-dimensional adventure, helmed by legendary horror director Sam Raimi. Both were forewarnings of events to come. In 2016's "Doctor Strange," Baron Mordo briefly warned Strange about the dangers of creating time branches and unstable dimensional openings. As a result, the multiverse started to fracture.
On the finale, Kang (Jonathan Majors) cautioned that if he was killed, variants from other timelines would start a multiversal war, the very thing that Miss Minutes warned about on the series premiere of "Loki." Loki's variant, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) did not heed that warning and killed Kang. The finale ended with over 60 alternate realities starting to branch off from the main one we've followed since the MCU began. On the season one "Loki" finale, the "sacred timeline" that the Time Variance Authority (TVA) swore to protect was compromised. If Disney and Marvel want to stay separate from Sony's "Spider-Man" movies (remember those movies are made by Sony Pictures in association with Marvel Studios), "Multiverse of Madness" may use the 2021 Disney+ series starring Tom Hiddleston's Loki to explain why the multiverse is fracturing.
